今晚我在这里要描述的都是些古老的观念。这些观念差不多早在17世纪就被哲学家们谈论过。那么为什么还要重复讨论这些观念呢？这是因为每天都会有新一代的人出生。因为人类历史上形成的这些伟大观念需要我们特意地、明确地、一代一代地传承下去，否则就会失传。

你只有了解并能够鉴赏我们这个时代的这一伟大的激动人心的非凡经历，你才会懂得科学的精髓，才能理解科学与其他事物的关系。你应当明白，科学活动就是一次巨大的探险，一种冲破约束、令人激动的探索，否则你就谈不上生活在这个时代。

法拉第演讲的要点是，不管你观察什么，只要你观察得足够仔细，你就会涉及整个宇宙。

法则越具体，其威力就越强大，同时也就越容易出现例外的情形，因而也就越有趣，越值得检验。

我相信，要解决任何一直悬而未决的难题，你必须让通向未知领域的大门敞开。你必须允许可能出现不完全正确的情形。否则，如果你已经抱有成见，就很可能解决不了这个问题。

正因为我们心存疑虑，我们才会在新的方向上探求新的设想。

这里我还想重申的是，我们只有容忍无知，容许不确定性，我们才有希望让人类沿着不受限制、不会被永远阻塞的方向上持续前进，而不再复现人类历史上多次发生过的情形。

有些事不科学并非是坏事，也没啥了不起，不该是不科学而已。当然，所谓科学，我是指那些可以试错的事情。

你能想象出，或是能品味或设想一个没有生命的世界会有什么意义吗？我们都习惯于从生命角度来看世界，这使我们无法理解没有生命将意味着什么，可在相当长的时间里，这个世界就是在没有生命的情形下度过的。而且在宇宙中的大部分地方，今天仍是什么生命都没有。

不管你观察什么，只要观察的足够仔细，就会涉及整个宇宙

人与人之间的关系，如果有一套独立的检验真理的方式，就不会变得那么争论不休。
